Build Your Own Camper DIY

If you are an RV enthusiast then you may be tempted to build your own camper. If so then you are not alone. There are lots of creative ideas available to build your own camper DIY ranging from building a teardrop travel trailer to a well build camper trailer.  Inspiration and DIY inclination is what it takes to build a homemade camper? Here are eight steps for building your very own homemade trailer.

Build Your Own Camper DIY

Step #1: Planning

To work on any project you need to start with a great deal of planning. And if you want to build a comprehensive camper with full amenities without the need for hookups, you will need to plan even more. Start by making a list of everything you want to have in your camper. Make a list of the things you love to have, and another list of the things you would prefer but aren’t necessary to the function of the camper. Ask yourself the basic question, where, and how often your will use the camper.

Step #2: The Frame

A customize camper will need a frame or design to work with. If you want something bigger or smaller you will have to adjust the frame design accordingly. If you are remodeling your old camper then first replace everything on the old frame. Then put in new floorboards, jack, coupler, taillights, etc. you may also upgrade the axle, wheels and tires.

Step #3: The Box

The body of the camper, or the box, goes on top of the trailer. For your camper, you can go for a plywood box and attached it to the trailer. The box size is largely determined by the size of the trailer, interior spacing and the items you want it to hold.

“Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a camper, which is kind of the same thing” – Unknown

Step #5: The Function

Functionality is the key when it comes to building a DIY camper. This camper may include three compartments inside the box. The first serves as a sliding kitchenette with a two burner cooktop, a simple sink, paper towel area, and a couple of drawers. You may also cover the counter with Formica that looked like stainless steel and is easier to clean.

The middle compartment holds the water tanks and pump. You can install a 20 gallon water tank and connect it to both the kitchen faucet and the outside bathing house.

The final compartment can be located at the rear of the box. A door can be built to allow access to a spare tire and any other necessary tools. It works great as a storage area as well, with oversized Rubbermaid containers that slide in and out.

Step #6: Components

If you want to build a camper outfitted for off-grid camping like boondocking then you’re going to need a source of power. For this you may go for solar power in combination with two batteries. You can mount the 12 watt solar panel on a slide out in front of the trailer and place the batteries in the toolbox near the front.

The solar panel supplies power to the water pump, the LED lights, and any other outlets installed in the camper. If you are not familiar with electrical work you may want to hire a professional do this part of the process for you because It’s important to get it right!

If you want to install propane as well, you could do that in one of the recessed compartments near the kitchenette. A propane tank can be used to fuel the cooktop and a camping water heater. It could also be used for basic heat if needed.

Step #7: The Extras

There are lots of extra items that you can add to your DIY build camper. For this camper the large extra item can be a roof top sleeping tent! A custom rack on the top of the box and two sheets of plywood creates a base for the tent which opens up to almost eight feet. If you are not a pro then should hire someone to do the framing, canvas, and mattress.

If you are looking for other extra accessories you might consider a 12 Volt fridge/freezer, a portable generator and a tool kit for emergency repairs. You can add a bathroom with a porta potty in a separate tent far from the camping site or you can use great units available on the market that are lightweight and some that even features a battery operated flush.

Step 8: Consider The Cost

Your costs to build your own camper will vary depending on your design and whether you do all the work yourself or hire professionals. If you like the idea of building something from scratch then this project may be for you. For Projects like this the key is staying focused and not getting discouraged when things don’t quite go the way you planned. A project like this is special and takes time and patience. If you think you have skills what it takes to build your own camper, give it a go!

2021 RV Roof Coating & Sealing Costs - Price per Square Foot, Waterproofing

RVs are unique in the sense because they are part vehicle part living space and as a result their maintenance requirements are quite different from traditional vehicles. Different RVs have different roofing materials and thus different maintenance requirements. That’s why the first step on your RV maintenance checklist should be to inform yourself on the proper materials and methods for handling things like the roof on your RV.

Resealing and recoating the RV roof is standard part of RV ownership which can give your RV roof additional years of life. Over time, however, RV roof may wear out so it may be necessary to fill in cracks, replace worn or damaged seals, or even reseal the entire roof for a fresh start. RV Roof Coating Cost will vary significantly, depending on a number of factors.

Do It Yourself to Save

Professional RV roof repair or dealership shops also offer maintenance services like regular tune ups, oil change and resealing jobs. However, they will charge over $1,000 for the job, with larger RVs requiring an estimated $1,500 to $2,000 for a full reseal. You can also cut the resealing costs into half by doing the resealing job yourself.

How Big is Your RV?

Larger the RV the greater will be the cost of resealing. RV roof coating cost also depends on other factors like how the RV roof is structured, number of fixtures like vents and openings on the RV roof. If you’re dealing with a vent, air conditioner, satellite dish, skylight, and every other possible roof fixture, you are going to spend a lot more time and money on the sealing process, regardless whether you DIY the resealing job or hire professionals.

Don’t Cheap Out

Resealing the RV roof is labor intensive job. Removing the old sealant can take hours to remove and may require a steady hand so that the old sealant is carefully removed without damaging the fixtures or the roof itself. Remember that while a quote might seem expensive, these people really are putting in a lot of work. Be sure to ask around and find out what other RVers in your area are spending on the resealing job, and how they are saving, by making the most of DIY roof resealing.

Inexpensive But Dedicated RV Roof Coatings Are Great!

Sealing your RV with a RV rubber roof coating is routine part of RV ownership. When you apply a roof coating to the RV roof it will last for about three to five years under normal wear and tear although this may vary from one RV to the next. For example someone who uses their RV on a regular basis and exposes it to rough terrain may need to recoat their roof every two or three years. On the other hand, the people who rarely use their RV and keep it under storage may be able to get away with not resealing for four to five years.

If you’ve owned any kind of recreational vehicle, you know that RV rooftop can take a beating. Whenever the RV brings on the need for repair, it usually starts at the top, where you’ll find—the roof. Issues that you’ll find with RV’s roof are gaps in the seams, water leaking in from somewhere, drafts coming in, or dents, dings, and scratches caused by flying debris or hail. You could also see water ponding, meaning your roof doesn’t have good drainage, or drying that leads to cracks.

Inexpensive But Dedicated RV Roof Coatings Are Great!

RV Rubber Roof Coatings

You can fix or prevent most or all of RV roof issues by applying one of the rubber roof coatings that’s on the market today. A coating like RV Roof Magic will help keep your roof in the up-keep shape possible and it will also extend the life of it for what could be decades.

Most RV rubber roof coatings are DIY products, meaning they are very easy to apply and handle. As these coatings comes in liquid form they are applied like a paint material but a little thicker and allowed to dry so it cures and creates an airtight, watertight, and UV resistant seal over the entire surface of the RV roof.

Is It Worth It?

The RV roof is exposed to rain, snow, ice, wind, dirt, debris, UV rays, hail, and so much more. All of these elements can cause damage to the roof and makes the structure vulnerable to even more damage. When the roof gets compromised, it allows the outside elements to come inside and creates more problems in the interior of the RV, if not prevented. You could potentially save thousands of dollars in repairs and replacements by applying one of the rubber roof coatings to RV’s roof top.

How Much Do RV Rubber Roof Coatings Cost?

The cost of coating or re-roofing your RV depends upon a number of factors. Some of the cost will be determined by how big the surface of your RV roof is, its condition and whether you opt for DIY installation or hire professionals.

RV coatings like RV Roof Magic don’t need a primer put on first and gives you total coverage in one coat. You can save time, money, and energy invested by using a product that gives you complete coverage and protection in just a single coat.

Although both are rubber roofs but both have different maintenance needs. You can also feel the difference between them by doing a touch and feel test.

A TPO roof is much shiner than EPDM roofs. Also, a TPO roof comes with heat-welded seams. Also TPO roofs are available in variety of colors and if it feels more like a plastic, then it’s likely a TPO roof. On the other hand if the roof feels like a rubber than it’s more likely an EPDM. EPDM roofs are only available in black or white colors. EPDM roof feels exactly like the material of a black inner tube and is cemented together instead of heat-welded.

Experts tips to successfully maintain your RV Roof…!!

One of the biggest concerns of an RV owner is maintenance and repair of the RV. Whether it is a RV breakdown in the middle of wilderness or an irritating roof leak, these things need immediate fixing to maintain the value of the RV. In fact nothing decreases the value of an RV than a leaking RV roof. The underlying reason is water will seep into the interior of your RV causing damage to the interior and electrical appliances of the RV.

Inspecting Your RV’s Roof

RV roof inspection is paramount. Before you start fixing any roof leaks you have to identify the possible causes and location of roof leaks. Schedule inspections will make your RV life easier and relieve you from much of the stress. Spending few minutes to look into your RV interior or just spending a half an hour on roof inspection will help you spot early roof problems and help you avoid costly roof failures.

How to access the RV Roof…?

To inspect the roof, you have to climb up on to the RV roof. There are two possibilities, possibility one when a ladder is attached to the RV and second when there is no ladder attached to the RV. An RV with a ladder support means you can safely climb to the roof and the RV roof will support your weight. This makes inspection easy. The other possibility is that when there is no ladder attached to the RV. This means there is a chance that the RV roof might not support your weight so you may have to use sheets of ply-wood to walk on certain areas of the roof.

While inspecting the roof look for areas which are damaged, dried or cracked. Also check the seals at the edges of the roof to make sure they are in-contact with the roof.

Lastly you have to inspect the interior of the RV for ceiling and water damage. If you see any dark spots on the ceiling or upper wall panels that’s a revealing sign of water seeping through a damaged roof and into the interior of the recreational vehicle. Also if the sun light is peeing in to the interior of the RV it means water can also seep through as well.

Tips for a better RV Roof

The easiest way to fix your RV roof is by providing a quality roof coating e.g. (RV Roof Magic) or a sealant to it. The new coating will provide your roof with protection it needs from the elements like sun, snow, and rain and will also fix any leaks and damages to the roof. Also you might find the caulking on your RV might be loosening up. If you’re not satisfied with the amount of caulking, use a quality caulk e.g. Rubex Caulk to ensure your roof’s durability is up to the mark.

As many states are easing up the restrictions on camping and with campgrounds reopening after post-Covid-19 pandemic many people have decided now is the time to try a motorhome vacation like never before.

Motorhome roof sealant Best Product Option Explored for Post Covid-19 RV travelling.

Currently there are so many roof coatings available on the market today offering solution for your RV but not all roof coatings are created equally. Protecting the RV is a big priority especially the roof from elements and potential damage.

“One aspect of protecting your RV roof is providing an RV roof coating.”

“Post Covid-19 people will be excited to get back on the road; it doesn’t mean we have to do a cross country trip.  People will be excited to get out of the house and roam in the wilderness using their RV.”

Roof coating is a synthetic rubber compound that can be applied to both flat and low-slopped roofs in a single coat application. How could you decide which roof coating is best for your RV needs? It depends on a number of factors.

Protection is a Must

Roof coatings offer abundance of protective features. They provide protection from UV-rays, resistance from heat and cold, water-resistance and protection from leaks and water damage, and more. Perhaps the most important feature of an RV roof coating is its ability to stretch/contract with changing temperatures. Liquid roofing is becoming a popular choice among RV owners as it offers flexibility and elasticity while creating a durable layer of protection over the RV roof. If the roofing membrane can’t keep up with changing temperatures, it will break a lot sooner causing the need for repairs.

Brand Reputation

There are lots of different brands available on the market today each offering plenty of benefits and claiming to be the best one. However, it is up to you to verify these claims, do your research and choose a best brand. Choose a brand that offer maximum benefits at a reasonable price and also offer you warranty to give you the peace of mind.

Application Method

If you’re taking the roof coating project as DIY make sure you choose the product that you can apply with ease. Most RV roof coatings offer simple application method but that not always is the case. Also if you want a roll-on type of product don’t go for a spray-on product because the application will be different. In short the best product option for your RV is which has the entire feature you want and it provides best protection at a reasonable price which you can afford. Lastly, the lifespan of an RV roof coating depends upon the usage of the RV and the condition the roof endures.

Even during Covid-19 Quarantine, A best RV roof coating should be the utmost priority …!!

There are a number of roof coating products available on the market claiming to be the best one, but not all products are created equally. Protecting the RV especially the roof should be the utmost priority as it is mostly overlooked part of your vehicle. One aspect of protecting your roof is by applying a protective roof coating. Most roof coatings currently are made up of synthetic rubber compound and offer numerous benefits. Roof coatings are applied to flat or low sloped RV roofs without the hassle of tapping seams or trying to cover up gaps like you might encounter using a sheeting roofing product for your RV.

“While corona virus spread is on the rise. It should be taken seriously. Follow the recommendations of CDC and WHO for safe travelling. Avoid travelling to those areas which are still virus hotspots. Stay put Stay safe.”
Protection is a Must

A roof coating should provide the RV roof with basic protection like water against water leaks, ponding and harmful UV-rays and should last for three to five years. Perhaps the most valuable feature of an RV roof coating is to bear the temperature fluctuations without cracking or becoming brittle. If your RV roof coating lacks this feature it will break and crack easily causing you to perform repairs much sooner than expected.

Brand Reputation and Quality

As said before not all roof coatings are created equal which means you have to reach out and search for the best one by doing a little bit of research and following the positive recommendations. A good quality roof coating is one which provides maximum benefit at reasonable price and also offers warranty to give you piece of mind. You may also stick to a particular brand because of its brand visibility but remember not all good products are household names.

Application Method

Make sure the coating you choose should be a DIY product and something that can be easily applied and handled without taking much time and energy. Most roof coatings are DIY products but that is not always the case. Plus you may want a roof coating which can be rolled on or sprayed-on which can come down to personal preference and availability of the tools.

Use the above tips to find the best roof coating which suits your specific needs and be hassle free.
